November 1st, All Saints Day, is a commemorated date within different cultures all over the world, that share a similar ancestral substrate. It comes with the arrival of dark and cold days, those that invite to stay at home, and remembering the beloved ancestors is very common wherever it is celebrated.

In Catalonia, there is this tradition of elaborating marzipan sweets named “panellets”, which were originally dedicated to the deceased ancestors. Nowadays, however, these sweets are losing presence as cultures are becoming more hybrid and Halloween is increasingly attracting the attention of the kids.

Aware of the situation, a well-known bakery in Barcelona, La Pastisseria Canal, entrusted us to create a product that would give back prominence to “panellets”, while they would increase their brand notoriety.

Our approach was to redesign the traditional "panellets", using the same raw materials, inspired by Halloween's imagery, using as reference the classic monsters that are still very much present in our culture. From the classic Jack-o-Lantern to the Invisible man, the Mummy, the Devil, the Cyclops, a Zombie or a Vampire, they were our first draft.

The main difficulty resided on creating a system that was easy to translate to the production of the sweets. We worked hand by hand with the professionals of Canal, in a series of workshops, to find the best system that allowed them to produce big quantities of final pieces without loosing too much detail, searching a balance between the recognisability of the characters and a streamlined production. The result was a series of sweets that had a unique visual style, using the limitations of the medium as a strenght.

Thanks to the experimentation and understanding of the production process and the capabilities of the raw material, with craftmanship and design working together, we were able to create a new product and a new metodology, that could be used not only in this project but as new knowledge for future challenges.
